Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born on November 12, 1961. She was the first Romanian to be awarded a score of 10 for an Olympic contest. Bela Karrolyi was the Romanian gymnastics instructor who became Comaneci's coach later in life, discovered her at age six. Comaneci participated for the first time in the 1969 national junior championships. She finished 13th. In the following year, she was crowned champion. In her very first international event in 1972 she took the top spot by winning three gold awards. When she competed for the first time at the senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva of Russia won five gold medals, as well being awarded a silver. She was the first female ever to successfully perform reverse double saltos after dismounting from an unbalanced parallel bar.
